Me?? I grew up watching my sisters raise their kids with phones, tablets, and TV. All these educational apps and shows. I thought that was the way, so that's what I was doing. But it wasn't working for my kids. They were either zoned out or bouncing off the walls. Then there was this time on one of you people's Lives, Mrs. Funmi talked about discipline and being the first and loudest voice in your child's life. Omo, it was like a lightning bolt. I realised I had given my voice away to YouTube. I figured out I wasn't taking charge, and these gadgets were stealing my children right from under my nose, and not even impacting them that much. I took charge. We have serious screen limits now, but more importantly, we have more 'us' time. It's harder, but our home is finally starting to feel like our own.

These kids are very inquisitive and I find them asking me a lot of questions. Coming from an African background, It was challenging for me because it's typically not discussed. I've got three boys -ages 13, 11, and 5. Funmi’s program really gave me all I needed to ensure that I have a rich conversation with my children and beyond that, I'm more confident to always talk about sex with them. We have grown to create this beautiful atmosphere everyday when they come back from school. I have got what I call - the gist of the day. I find out what's happening in their life so we can discuss. As a single parent, raising a boy child who is becoming conscious and curious about his body parts is a lot of challenges. I always find it difficult to answer his numerous questions just because I’m being careful of giving too much information. For me, going through the Rise2Parent course was really a game-changer. I have been able to learn how to give age-appropriate responses to his questions. Now, I’ve overcome information underload and overload in sexuality education. Thank you Rise2Parent for all you do. The sessions were worth every second.

One of the challenges of being a new parent is finding realistic and practical resources since there is no precedence to draw from. Hence, I would like to say a big thank you for arming me with so many resources I can personally relate to. This has been tremendously helpful to me and my family. A good example is the video on answering curiosity questions, we found it very insightful because kids get a lot of information from their peers. Great job, Funmi!

Funmi’s parenting process are simple yet effective. Her teaching helped me to understand myself more on what I value most and the key values I want to impact on my child. I become clearer in my communication with my son. And when something happens now, before I respond, I always ask myself what values do I want to impact and I believe that this action-values alignment has help me to become a more effective father.
